Starting physician on the clinical residency threshold: expectations and challenges

Abstract

The authors reviewed current regulatory framework in terms of training medical specialists in clinical residency. 8 core competencies present in all federal educational standards for residency programs were included into the questionnaire. Participants were asked to evaluate the significance of each of these competencies on a 10-point scale. Total 339 respondents starting their first year of residency at the A.I. Evdokimov Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry were surveyed. Significant differences were found in scores of certain competencies related to the gender, age and specialty of students. A multi-dimensional cluster analysis of the study results was conducted according to which these professional competencies were divided into 2 clusters. The results of the survey indicate that both dental and medical residents who are starting their postgraduate training are mostly focused on acquiring the competencies necessary for direct work with patients. The authors suggested that closer contact of trainees with potential employers would contribute to their professional development into highly qualified medical professionals.
