Methodological strategies of the SPICES model in English for academic purposes

Abstract

This paper presents implementation of the elective course "Academic English for Medical Science" developed at the Voronezh State Medical University named after N.N. Burdenko. The course is based on methodological principles which integrate linguistic approach to Academic English writing with key strategies of the SPICES model. The authors suppose that the outlined strategies, namely student-centered learning, problem-based learning and outcome-based learning may and should serve as criteria for medical students and can contribute to learning of pragmatic, lexical-semantic, grammar-syntactic and genre-functional aspects Academic English.
