ADULT LEARNING THEORIES: IMPLICATIONS FOR LEARNING AND TEACHING IN MEDICAL EDUCATION: AMEE GUIDE NO. 83

Abstract

There are many theories that explain how adults learn and each has its own merits. This guide explains and explores the more commonly used ones and how they can be used to enhance student and faculty learning. The guide presents a model that combines many of the theories into a flow diagram which can be followed by anyone planning learning. The schema can be used at curriculum planning level, or at the level of individual learning. At each stage of the model, the guide identifies the responsibilities of both learner and educator. The role of the institution is to ensure that the time and resources are available to allow effective learning to happen. The guide is designed for those new to education, in the hope that it can unravel the difficulties in understanding and applying the common learning theories, whilst also creating opportunities for debate as to the best way they should be used.

ADHERENCE TO INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATIONS AND SELF-ASSESSMENT OF HEALTH-RELATED QUALITY OF LIFE IN MEDICAL UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract

This paper presents relationship between network activity and self-assessment of health among medical students. As a result of the study, it was found that medical students in the initial period of study experience serious problems with adaptation to the educational space of the university, which is resulting in a low selfassessment of their physical and mental status, however, health-related quality of life statistically significantly increased closer to graduation. When dealing with interactive services, students are most committed to traditional web-based tools for communication. The most popular internet services among medical students are such communication and information platforms as: youtube, VK, Instagram. The tendency to shift the focus of popularity among students towards interactive platforms with enhanced video playback capabilities, active formats in form of «streams» requires usage of this data both to increase online learning possibilities and for an intensive message about healthy lifestyle and healthpreserving behavior stereotypes.

More than 60% of medical students spend more than 3 hours a day on the Internet, a quarter - 4 hours or more. Duration of stay on the Internet has a medium inverse correlation with self-assessment of their mental status (r= -0.49). The most vulnerable group from point of view of the excessive and destructive influence of interactive communications were male students of I-III years of study. More than 80% of them suffer from Internet addiction and may require psychological and pedagogical intervention, administrative and psychotherapeutic interactions.
