MODERN APPROACHES TO TEACHING POINT-OF-CARE ULTRASOUND PROGRAMS

Abstract

In the last decade the point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) diagnostic approach has proven its clinical effectiveness and therefore requires wider implementation in clinical practice of doctors of different specialities. This requirement sets before medical education the task of competent organization of educational process which seems to be difficult in the context of limited information on this issue. A review of modern world literature highlighting the problem of organizing training sessions for POCUS programs was carried out. The authors showed that training should include theoretical training in fundamentals of ultrasound diagnostics and technical aspects of corresponding protocol, and should be accompanied by skills training in simulated conditions. Practical part of the training should include work not only on a real ultrasound machine but also on a virtual simulator. The minimum required course duration is determined by the scanned area being studied. It was shown that formation of a skill requires an independent assessment of 25-50 scans of each of the studied areas. Regular application of the skill in practice is necessary to maintain it.
